Temporary architecture occupies a fascinating middle ground between installation art and conventional building. The Summerfest Pavilion commission challenged our team to design a structure that would serve as both a functional gathering space and a striking visual landmark — one that would create a powerful sense of occasion during the festival period and then disappear without a trace from the landscape it temporarily occupied.

Structure, Shadow, and Gathering

The design process began with a study of the site — an open public plaza subject to intense summer sun and occasional strong winds. These climatic conditions immediately shaped the pavilion's architectural response. The structure needed to provide generous shading while allowing air movement through its form. A series of angled canopy planes, tilted to maximise shade at peak afternoon hours, became the structural and visual signature of the design.

The material palette was driven by the temporary nature of the commission. We specified prefabricated steel members that could be assembled and disassembled efficiently by a small crew. The canopy itself was constructed from a woven tensile fabric, selected for its high UV resistance and striking translucency — casting a filtered, atmospheric light beneath the structure during daylight hours and glowing warmly from within during evening events.

Context illustrations were central to the design development process. Rather than relying purely on plan and section drawings, we produced a series of perspective renderings showing the pavilion in use — during a midday gathering, at dusk as the fabric membrane began to illuminate, and from a distance across the plaza. These illustrations allowed stakeholders to experience the pavilion emotionally before it was built.

The pavilion also incorporated integrated seating, a central performance stage, and directional acoustic panels that focused sound toward the audience while minimising noise spillover to adjacent streets. Hospitality kiosks were embedded into the structure's perimeter columns, ensuring that the event infrastructure was architecturally considered rather than bolted on as an afterthought.

The Summerfest Pavilion was occupied for six weeks before being carefully dismantled. In that time, it hosted over forty events and became a genuine place of community gathering — photographed thousands of times and remembered fondly by everyone who passed through it.

Temporary architecture, when executed well, can create permanent memories. This project reminded us why the pavilion typology remains one of the most exciting in our field.
